Nassau Community College has been established as an institution committed to academic excellence. In order to take full advantage of the College’s offerings students, faculty, and staff must be fully aware of their surroundings.
Even the most brilliant mind is no defense against the disease of alcoholism and the use and abuse of other substances. As an institution of higher education, Nassau Community College prepares students to pursue productive and civilized lives. In this mission, the College is taking a proactive, preventative approach to assuring that the campus is free of alcohol and substance abuse.
The College operates in compliance with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 (P.L.100-690) and the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments (P.L. 101-226).
To maintain an atmosphere conducive to fulfilling this mission, the following policy has been implemented:
The College expressly prohibits the unlawful use, possession, manufacture, distribution or dispensation of controlled substances, which includes alcohol, in all Nassau Community College facilities or while attending or conducting College business off campus.
No alcohol is permitted on campus without expressed permission of the President or his designee. Consumption of alcohol is not permitted on campus by anyone under the age of 21.
The following are encouraged under the policy
I. The institution encourages faculty to incorporate elements of alcohol and substance abuse education into their curriculum.
II. The College encourages active participation in an annual Alcohol Awareness Week and other substance awareness programs to educate students, faculty, and staff. Such programs should include ongoing workshops, in conjunction with various College organizations.
III. The College specifically encourages students to play an integral part in a peer organization to aid all students in making proper decisions regarding alcohol and other substance use.
The College is acutely aware of the inherent health risks involved in alcohol and other substance use and abuse; as stated in the Health Risk section: Appendix A of the policy.
Finally, the College joins with the community in encouraging those in need of assistance to seek help and guidance from services on campus and in our community, as stated in the Campus and Community Services section: Appendix B.
The full policy for a drug-free campus, with complete appendices, is available at the library, the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Personnel Services. Copies of the policies will be distributed at Orientation and other College functions. In compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments, a biennial review of this policy will be conducted.
